The MULTI-FAM project proposes the combination of materials with different functionalities, the process of additive manufacturing by directed laser deposition (DED), the thermodynamic simulation and of process, as enabling technologies to obtain 3 D multi-material and multi-functional parts for the direct application in siderurgical processes.

The main objective of the project is to manufacture multi-functional 3D parts, using different materials, by a direct laser deposition process of metal to be used in the siderurgical sector. The additive manufacturing process will be assisted by a materials intelligent design methodology and of process based on finite element simulation and the thermodynamic simulation of materials and their compatibility. In parallel, the manufacturing process will be designed based on the optimal selection of parameter and manufacturing strategies according to the materials to be deposited at each site, and will develop monitoring systems and process control to determine the geometry of the deposited layers and the filler material.

In addition to the technological advantages of FA processes, these technologies allow to maximise the efficiency of use of resources because don’t use tools, moulds or dies, but, above all, in the maximum use of raw materials, with almost produce no waste. On the other hand, direct deposition technologies are used to repair or rebuild components, which also minimises excessive part replacement in the production sector. All this minimises the environmental impact compared to traditional manufacturing solutions, which makes the MULTI-FAM project fall under CHALLENGE 5. Climate Change and use of Natural Resources and Raw Materials.

MULTI-FAM is a project funded by the Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación – Agencia Estatal de Investigación within the RETOS COLABORACIÓN 2019 aid programme, co-financed by the Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional with the aim of to promote technological development, innovation and quality research.
