(SIMET) NUMERICAL SIMULATIONS FOR METALLIC FRAGMENTS IMPACT ON COMPOSITES SOLUTIONS

Funding: Airbus Operations S.L.
Region: Industrial
Project period: 2011 – 2016
Principal Investigator: Dr. Carlos González (carlosdaniel.gonzalez@imdea.org)

This industrial contract is the continuation of the research collaboration between AIRBUS Operations and IMDEA Materials Institute which aims at designing, manufacturing and validating innovative composite shields against high velocity impacts of the new aircrafts A30X.

The R&D project deals with the evaluation of the impact performance of composite materials against the high velocity impacts of metallic fragments including new concepts designs and new materials for fuselage protection. The project is being developed by means of computational mechanics based on finite elements approach and considers the damage and erosion of materials due to the impact.
